- Summary:
- This is a new and enlarged edition of Professor Allen's highly successful book on the pronunciation of Attic Greek in classical times. In this third edition, the author has in particular revised the presentation of the controversial question of stress; the chapter on quantity has been extensively recast and an appendix has been added on the names of the letters of the Greek alphabet, to provide a parallel and an historical background to the similar appendix in the second edition of his Vox Latina. Recent work has also made possible throughout a more precise chronology of phonetic changes.
- The total amount of revision since the first edition has made it necessary to reset the whole book, and in addition to the new material the supplementary notes of the second edition are now incorporated in the main text, making this a much more convenient book to use.
- Classicists in general and students of Greek phonology and prosody in particular will find this book essential reading.
