Biography/History:
Weiss received his B.S. in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1905. He became active in coal tar products and catalytic oxidation of benzene in New York City.
Summary:
Weiss's name appears on some of the Lefax binders which contain these notes. Some of the typed notes end with the initials JMW (Weiss), CRD (Charles Raymond Downs), Wm. H. Kobbe, or other combinations, and a date. Notes are arranged by topic, with bibliographies for several topics. Bibliographies include abstracts of research dating from 1866. Notes discuss American and European chemical, coal, and oil companies; royalties, patents, and licensing.
Notes include abstracts of articles, bibliographies, reports of visits to plants, comparison of productivity of plants, tables of data, printed pages of data, and summaries of letters and agreements, some signed Weiss and Downs. Topics include asphalt, tar, coal carbonization, catalysis, distillation, road surfaces, benzols, phenol, ammonia, anthracene, and tar oils.
