Biography/History:
Roger Taney was Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Summary:
Letter dated 7 January 1853 to Justice Benjamin R. Curtis, commending him for his plan "to publish an edition of the decisions of the Supreme Court." This probably refers to his Reports of Decisions in the Supreme Court of the United States (Boston: Little, Brown, 1855-1856). Justice Curtis is perhaps best known as the author of the dissenting opinion in the Dred Scott case.
