- Consists of eight letters: one postmarked 31 May 1892 and addressed to Thomas W. Hotchkiss (salutation says Thomas W. Hitchcock), which was later pasted onto a card together with a portrait engraving (probably of Smith); one undated letter to "Carey" in Smith's hand and signed "Carter;" one dated 9 November 1906 to C. B. Vaux; one undated letter to T. B. Aldrich; one undated letter to a Miss Lancaster; two undated letters to J. K. Bangs; and one note dated 29 January 1894 on the stationery of the Boston Athletic Association, signed by Smith both in his own name and as "Col. Carter of Cartersville."
