Biography/History:
Francis Hopkinson was a judge of the Court of Admiralty of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Summary:
Consists of one legal document, one account sheet, and one portrait engraving.
The legal document is dated 17 June 1786 and directs Clement Biddle, Marshal of the Court of Admiralty, to seize and attach a schooner called the Betsey in the Port of Philadelphia, due to nonpayment of debts owed to Nicholas Young and Jacob Schrider for repairs to the ship. On the reverse is a note from Biddle to Hopkinson dated 20 June 1786 indicating that Biddle was unable to find the ship because it had left the state.
The account sheet notes the pay of one year's salary as Judge of Admiralty and the amount of fees, as per accounts rendered, for the four quarters of 1786.
The engraving was made "from the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers" (Johnson, Fry & Co., New York). It is undated but was printed ca. 1862; it contains the notation, "entered according to act of Congress A.D. 1862." It also contains a facsimile of Hopkinson's signature.
