- Summary:
- This seventh and final volume of The Course of Life completes the developmental cycle with a discussion by specialists in the field of aging regarding the special concerns of those 65 and older. As George H. Pollock notes in his Preface "the developmental point of view -- a hallmark of psychoanalytic psychology -- is now one of the standard approaches to understanding life progression and associated pathology". It is in this lively spirit of ongoing development that the authors consider the multitude of issues arising in the later stages of life. The developmental view of old age sees it as a period of having an array of changes and progressions, as earlier life stages do -- a period of intense living rather than "predeath". Indeed, as Ewald W. Busse points out. "Many people 65 and older who statistically are assigned to the older population actually consider themselves to be middle aged, both mentally and physically".
