- In the midst of the Great Depression, workers in Chicago's packinghouses, steel mills, and other mass production factories, many of whom were unemployed, demanded that the federal government come to their rescue. These stockyard workers paraded down the streets of the Back of the Yards neighborhood in late 1932 agitating for more government relief. A few years later, industrial demands of their employers as well.
