A study of the work of seven 18th century travellers who collected zoological data in this area and who recorded their observations. The materials left by these explorers and by their predecessors are analyzed for all mammals and birds, emphasizing history, taxonomy, nomenclature and zoogeography. Included are many details on species now extinct, such as the lion and rhinoceros of the Cape of Good Hope, the guagga and the bluebock. Many examples are illustrated, 16 in color.
