"'The International' was first presented by the New Playwrights Theatre at their playhouse, 40 Commerce St., New York, on the evening of January the twelfth, 1928, as the first production of their second season. Staged by The Author; Settings by John Dos Passos; Music by Edward A. Ziman ..."

"'The International' is musical throughout. It requires full musical score along modernistic lines with special emphasis on broken rhythms, machine noises and chanting blues. This necessitates singing voice for a number of the actors. The chanting is a weaving of jazz rhythms with orchestral backgrounds ... The method is new and requires new form of presentation. The drama is a formalized pattern or symphony. The music must have the same quality as the play itself ... The author has retained in the printed version certain material which he felt it necessary to cut from the acting version both because of the length of the play and the difficulties of presentation. The most important omission in the acting form is that of the choral scence in Act IV ..."--Production Footnotes.
